Get Ready To Race Your Mates - Transmoto 2024 main image

You're In For A Good Time

In a basic sense Transmoto is 2 epic days of fun on a dirt bike with your mates.  But what is it really?  A recreational enduro race that runs for 8-10 hours.  The course is custom-created on private properties spanning between 15-18 km, so that'll usually take the average rider around 30 minutes per lap.  The track will generally be a mixture of single-track, fire roads, with some natural-terrain grass tracks built in. But it's a two day event, so rock up on the Saturday, have a good time with ya mates, camp, and race on Sunday.

How Does The Weekend Work?

  • Arrive at the property on Saturday and complete the in-car rider sign-on.
  • Don't forget your photo ID and MA licence will both be checked (if you don't have an MA licence a One Event Competition Licence can be purchased through Transmoto before the event)
  • Collect your timing transponder (you'll need to leave a driver's licence as collateral) and team number stickers
  • Find your pits:  Each team is designated a sign-posted 6x12 m lot for camping and pitting.  Keep in mind, only 2 vehicles permitted per plot
  • Scrutineering and a compulsory riders briefing are completed on Saturday
  • Saturday arvo the fun and games begin with sponsor activities:  Dunlop Tyre toss and the Gaerne Rut Limbo
  • Enter the MXstore boot race to battle it out for the top 40 positions on the starting line or if you want pole position, bid at the pole position auction for a one-minute head start on the whole field (proceeds are donated to the event charity)
  • Race Day Sunday: The race start time will be discussed at riders' briefing, head down to the start line to claim your spot, and get ready for a big day of racing!

What Do I Enter?

There are 4 classes, the Iron Man (solo), Pairs, and Teams of 3 or 4 (these are grouped together for the class results). Classes are then broken down into team categories, pay attention because this is how you'll get that all-important bling:

  1. Weekend Warriors (no rider to have ever raced professionally, no sponsor hook-ups or dealer support, paid your own entry fee);
  2. Young Guns (all riders under 23, as of the event date);
  3. Wise Wizards (average rider age must be at least 50, as of the event date);
  4. Mixed (at least one female rider);
  5. Wonder Women (all female riders); or
  6. Open (general team entry, if you’re not eligible for any of the above Categories).

Prep Your Bike

1. Complete Check Over

Make sure your bike is up to scratch, take it for a test ride before you set off, or at the very least make sure it starts! Check over the bike front to back:

  • Make sure you have plenty of meat on your brake pads, brake rotors aren't worn, check brake lines, and brake fluid
  • Check your clutch is functioning
  • Drive-train: chain and sprockets are in good condition, make sure chain tension is within spec
  • Check over bolts and make sure they're torqued
  • Look for broken or loose spokes and tension
  • Make sure fork seals aren't leaking
  • Coolant is topped up

Finally, give your bike a service, if you're going to be pushing it you want your bike to have the best opportunity for survival, so change the oil and oil filter, make sure your air filter is clean and in good condition, if not throw in a new air filter too.  We’ve seen so many people let down by not prepping their steed correctly, don't let this be you. If you are unsure about a particular part we recommend replacing it, there's nothing worse than driving hours and paying your entry fees only for your day to be finished by a chain failure, or brake pads that are metal on metal!

2. Scrutineering

You should have fixed any issues you found when checking your bike, so this really shouldn't be an issue. On Saturday your bike will need to pass scrutineering, this is in accordance with Motorcycling Australias' 2024 Manual of Motorcycle Sport.  In case you missed anything, bikes will need to have plugged handlebar ends, a handlebar pad, complete levers with ball-ends, a return spring on the rear brake pedal, self-returning throttle, sprung footpegs, side stands must be secured (if your bike is fitted with a stand), and an exhaust that meets noise emission standards.

3. Tyres

You’ve invested a lot to get to this event, be ahead of the game and make sure your tread is fresh and you're hooking up. Don’t wait until you finish your first lap to realise you should have installed new tyres. Dunlop has a huge selection of tyres for a variety of terrains along with many other brands, don’t let bad traction let you or your team down.

To Get You Through The Race

Air Filters

You never know what conditions you’ll get, so we recommend being prepared for anything, and that means bringing extra air filters that are oiled and ready to go. If it’s dusty you’re going to need to keep that filter clean, so have em’ on rotation, and for an extra layer of protection you may want to grab a filter skin.

Spares

Anything could happen, so be prepared for the worst.  There are a few essential spares you should always carry when riding your dirt bike offroad, for the event at the very least make sure you pack spare tubes, clutch and brake levers, and a spark plug (particularly for 2 strokes).

Tools

Your spare tube won't be much help if you don't pack the tools to change it, a pump and tyre pressure gauge would probably come in handy too.  These are long races and you're likely to experience a tip-over or two, so it could be good to bring an essentials tool kit that you can throw in your hydration pack in case you get stuck when you're out on the track, but it would be best to bring a good variety of tools for your pit setup.  If you do get caught out, there is bound to be someone who can help out with some running repairs, but don't count on this by leaving everything at home!

Helmet

If you're pushing your limits you are bound to go down at some point. A good helmet is always a must, you only have one head so make sure you do your best to protect it.  Your helmet will need to pass scrutineering on Saturday, you'll need a helmet that meets the standards as discussed on page 249 of the Manual of Motorcycle Sport and has a helmet standards label that is readable.

Hydration

You'll need a good hydration pack, depending on the location of the event and the size of the circuit, some of these enduro laps are 25 to 45 minutes long! It is also a good idea to stash some energy gels in your hydration backpack and pack some electrolytes so you can replace the salts in your body to reduce the risk of dehydration and cramping. Top up on all of your rider supplements before the event so you're performing at your peak for the whole ride.

Other

Tear-offs are not permitted at Transmoto events, so you may need to pick up a set of roll-offs to get you through. When refueling you'll need an enviro mat under your bike to prevent any spillage, each pit will also be required to have at least one 1KG ABE-type Dry Powder fire extinguisher.
