A dirt bike throttle tube plays an incredibly important role, which is why it should always be in perfect working order. In this guide, we cover the ins and outs of throttle tubes!

What's the difference between a plastic throttle tube and an aluminium throttle tube?
The majority, if not all, dirt bikes come fitted with a plastic OEM throttle tube, and they're also a common replacement for many riders as they're the most affordable option. Plastic throttle tubes do come with a downfall, and that is that they're susceptible to damage in a crash, considering they're only a thin plastic tube. This can not only ruin your weekend of riding, but it also poses a safety issue - a damage throttle tube can cause the throttle to become stuck. Plastic throttle tubes still have their place and are ideal for recreational riders.

Aluminium throttle tubes are much stronger compared to plastic throttle tubes, however, they do come at a higher price. There are multiple different options of aluminium throttle tubes, and they're a must-have for any motocross or enduro racer, as they'll give you the peace of mind that they're durable to handle what's thrown at them.

Are there performance throttle tubes available?
Yes, there are throttle tubes available that you would consider as a 'performance' offering. This can come in the form of the throttle tube itself or the throttle cam. Many aftermarket throttle tubes have the option to switch out the throttle cam, which allows you to change how much long or short the throttle pull is. For example, a short throttle cam will mean the throttle will be more aggressive and reach the stopper with just a small pull, while a long throttle cam will mean the throttle will have a softer feel to it, and it will require a greater pull to reach its maximum.

The other type of 'performance' throttle tube provides a smooth and consistent feeling on the throttle by using sealed bearings, such as the Works Connection Elite throttle tube or Pro Taper Throttle Tubes. This type of throttle tube rolls smoother and better, providing a stronger response when you hit the gas.

When should I replace my throttle tube?
There generally two times when you'll need to replace your throttle tube - the first when you want to replace your standard grips, and the second when your throttle tube is damaged.

On a number of dirt bikes, the OEM grip is moulded to the throttle tube, meaning the throttle tube is essentially useless once you want to replace the standard grip.

Throttle tube damage can come in the form of cracks, splits, and possibly even bending out of shape. If you notice any of these signs of damage, it's time to immediately replace your throttle tube prior to the next ride.

What if I want lock-on grips?
If you want to use lock-on grips, such as the offering from ODI, then your grip will be moulded to the throttle tube. If you want or need to replace the throttle tube, you'll need to buy a new set of lock-on grips.
