The Ultimate Unsupported Adventure | Riding from Gympie to Broome

At MXstore, we love nothing more than seeing riders push limits, test gear, and create stories that remind us why we ride. This winter, we followed Jemma Wilson and her dad, Ted 5000km across Australia through some of the most remote and difficult terrain there is. Starting from Gympie and finishing up in Broome. This isn’t just a road trip, it’s an unsupported adventure into the heart of Australia, across the Simpson Desert, along Tanami Desert Road, and into Broome, the perfect test for the gear we ride and sell at MXstore. From luggage setups to riding boots, helmets, and hydration packs, everything is being thrown into real-world conditions that no showroom could ever replicate. 

Jemma Wilson and her dad had been planning on doing a similar trip in 2020 just before covid locked down the country, now 2025 and with her dad getting on in years, it was a now or never type of deal. The Simpson Desert is a very difficult traverse, especially being unsupported - and he is only getting older. The trip was to connect more and share their love of two wheels and adventuring. MXstore has been a long-time supporter of Jemma, and with 'ride more' being at the core of our purpose and existence, we jumped on board for the first part of the trip, as Jemma's husband, Jon, couldn't make the whole trip. We were basically MXexpressing his bike over to the other side of the country.

The Riders

Jemma Wilson – Enduro champ, coach, and adventure rider who lives and breathes two wheels. She’s taking on the challenge aboard a Norden 901 and sharing every moment with us along the way.

Ted (aka Dad) – At 65, Ted is the spark behind this adventure. A lifelong rider who once circled Australia on a BMW in his twenties, he’s the reason Jemma rides today. With his Husky 701, Ted is proving that the spirit of adventure doesn’t fade with age.

Guy Streeter – Media guy from MXstore who will be capturing everything as they cross from one side of the country to the other.

The Route

The plan is simple: avoid the tarmac as much as possible and embrace the wild.

Getting There: Gympie → Birdsville → Simpson Desert along the French Line→ Mt Dare → Alice Springs → Tanami Road → Halls Creek → Broome.

Getting Home: MXstore will be leaving the trip in Broome as Jemma’s Husband will ride the return leg starting in Broome.

Broome → Halls Creek → Top Springs → Barkley Tablelands → Julia Creek → Winton → Jericho → Springsure → Gympie.

Episode 1:

Riding 5000km across the country! The first part of the journey was meant to be the fun and easy part before we travelled through the Simpson Desert. Things took a different turn and there were a few hurdles in the way to get from Gympie to Birdsville, which is the gateway to the Simpson Desert!

Episode 2:

This leg of The Ultimate Unsupported Adventure saw Jemma Wilson and her dad, Ted tackle one of the toughest rides in the country. There’s no easy way across the Simpson Desert, especially when you’re doing it unsupported along the iconic French Line, the weight of the extra gear made this stretch of red sand a continuos 3 day battle as we tackled the endless dunes at the very heart of Australia.
