Thumper Nats Returns After 20 Years

Thumper Nats returned after 20 years on the side line of the Aussie racing scene, welcomed back to life in the back hills of Taree, at Wherrol Flat on October 4-5, 2025. A full mix of riders filled the paddock, from ex-pros, amateurs, previous Thumper Nats racers to the next generation of young guns competing in 250 gates. 12 classes from 4-Stroke Rolling Thunder, Chick Chase, Legends, Vets, Farm Bike Cup, XRs Only and more, all lining up on the start line across the 8 races.

The Event

The clear sky conditions were great for camping but the heat came in on Sunday creating dustier than expected conditions for the grasstrack comeback. Luckily it was filled with enthusiastic riders keen to race the brand new track designed by Geoff Ballard with massive help from Al the landowner to bring the dream to life. Keeping it fun and relaxed, a peg draw for gate picks happened every race, plus the start light was beamed off a 4x4 headlights. One rider jump started multiple times, he was docked 20 points and had to start his last race facing backwards.

On Track Action

Classic rock n roll filled the airwaves as Wherrol Flat local Mick Lyon won the Rat Racing Veterans class, Joshua Ballard took line honours of the Motul TTR Cup. World Champions Jess Gardiner and Geoff Ballard battled it out on the track together as the Chick Chase and Legends classes were combined making for some seriously entertaining racing.

Jeremy Carpentier took victory in the Zeta Unlimited All Powers class with wins across moto 2 and 3 aboard his Yamaha. Joey Shep made a clean sweep of wins in each race winning the Armour Vision Farm Bike Cup with John Prutti taking out every race in the ODI XRs Only over 300cc Class on his 2001 XR400, which he rode to Cape York and back earlier this year.

Prutti also won the Pro Circuit 2-Stroke Rolling Thunder Class on a 2001 RM250 he purchased on the Friday night prior for $2,000, turns out even with a powervalve issue he could get the thing to the podium.

Riders were stoked with the track and pumped to see the grass track event come back to life. The racing was packed with action and characters made super entertaining by the epic commentary by Mark Dyball 30ft in the air thanks to the Newcastle Access scissor lift.

The Community

Special thanks to the huge effort put in by landowner Alister Graham, his son Alan and their crew for hosting the event on their beautiful land in Wherrol Flat, it has been a labour of love to bring this event to reality and it was an incredible venue to welcome riders and fans alike.

It was a massive effort from all parties, from GB on track building and racing, Ben of CHMCC, sponsors bringing the froth and prizes, volunteers flag marshalling, helping on the gate, plus the legendary hammer time squad Ant, Scott, Andrew and the crew. The Wherrol Flat Community Hall did an amazing job catering with local beef, thanks to the water truck drivers, the Bobin RFS on Traffic Control, our MXstore staff, media team, industry media and riding community lending a hand. It felt like a tiny team to bring a big concept to life.

Moto events will not happen without the support and help from the community, so please help your local clubs and events in the future. Please fill out this form if you would like to help next with Thumper Nats year.
