When it comes to dirt bike protection, most riders will equip themselves with the essentials, such as helmet, boots, gear, and knee braces. However, a rather rare piece of protection in motocross and enduro is a mouthguard.

So should you be wearing one?

Well, there are two key reasons you should consider a mouthguard or mouthpiece for dirt bike riding. Let us explain!

Protect your teeth: You're probably used to seeing players in contact sports using mouthguard, with the primary focus of to protect their teeth - it's no different in motocross, even though we wear a full-face helmet. There are a couple of instances where you can suffer painful and costly teeth damage, such as from roost and heavy impacts. A mouthguard will help prevent or reduce the severity of any damage to your teeth in such instances, which is already a really good reason to consider using one.

Reduce concussion severity: This isn't the most commonly known fact about mouthguard, but they can actually reduce, and in some cases prevent, concussions. The mouthpiece holds your jaw in place, meaning your top and bottom jaw aren't smashing each other under impact, while it also absorbs energy in the event of a heavy hit that can ultimately lead to a concussion. This is a key reason for moto riders to consider a mouthguard.

Are they a choking hazard? These days, regardless if you're buying an off the shelf mouthguard or a custom moulded mouthguard, they come equipped with a tether that can be secured to the chin bar of your helmet, preventing it from getting lodged in your throat.

Off the shelf, or custom? An off the shelf mouthguard is a really cost-effective option for riders, and it's definitely an affordable way to see you like wearing a mouthguard while riding. We'd definitely recommend a custom mouthguard, as this will have the best fitment, comfort, and of course, protection.
