The five most common MX parts to fail

Motocross and enduro bikes are machines, which means they're going to fail at multiple stages of their life. Some dirt bike parts fail more often than others, and we've compiled the five most common to keep an eye one.

Spark plug: Spark plugs aren't known to commonly fail on a four-stroke dirt bike, but it's a completely different story on a two-stroke. Generally, a failed spark plug is called a fouled spark plug, and this can happen through many different scenarios, including bad fuel, dirty air filter, incorrect premix ratio, rich air & fuel ratio, and clogged power valves amongst other things. Fortunately, spark plugs are super affordable and easy to switch over, and we always recommend keeping a spare in your race day toolbox.

Clutch: Clutch failure can happen in many different ways, and some clutch components last longer than others. Generally speaking, you'll burn through clutch plates and springs, while other parts such as the hub and basket will have a longer life. Clutch parts also extend to the clutch cable, which is another item that is more common to fail than other parts over time.

Tyre tubes: Tubes are amongst the most common parts to fail, and they can be quite unpredictable. We've all suffered a flat tyre before, and the cause can multiple different things, such as incorrect tyre pressure, to simply catching a rock or ledge on the track or trails.

Chain: A chain is possibly one of the toughest components on your dirt bike as it's under incredible amounts of load, but that also means it can be susceptible to failure. Chain failure generally comes in the form of incorrect tensions, overuse, and poor chain maintenance. They can also snap in rare circumstances, however, it's generally from one of the above causes.

Piston: When a dirt bike engine gives way, it's usually the piston that fails first. There are many contributing factors to piston failure, including overuse, poor or low engine oil, overheating engine, leaking head gasket, and debris amongst other things
