3 things to check after crashing your dirt bike

Crashing a dirt bike sucks, and while most times we can escape without injury, our motocross bikes and gear can be a bit worse for wear.

In this guide, we cover three pieces of gear and parts to inspect after suffering a crash while dirt bike riding.

Helmet: The first thing you want to check after a crash is your helmet, especially if you've hit your head. Dirt bike helmets are designed to take one big impact, meaning it's incredibly important to inspect your helmet to determine whether it can continue to be used, or needs to be ditched in the bin. Check for any cracks or compression on the EPS liner, and as well as cracks on the outer shell. If there any signs of cracks or compression, it's time to immediately replace the helmet.

Handlebars: Handlebars are typically one of the first things to tweak in a decent motocross or enduro crash. There are two things to check here - first, you'll want to ensure the front end hasn't been twisted or that the bar mounts have moved (if they're rubber mounted!). Straighten the front end if needed, and then inspect the bars to see if they've been bent. If the bars are not straight, it's time for a new set - do not try and bend the bars back into position, as the structural integrity is no longer there.

Radiators: Radiators are amongst the most important components on a dirt bike, yet they're the most fragile as well. Unless you have radiator braces, then there's a good chance your radiators could be bent or punctured depending on the crash. We always recommend inspecting your radiators to ensure they won't cause any overheating issues and subsequently damage your engine.
